It was a long day yesterday, to say the least.
I woke up at 5:30 a.m., got my extra stuff together and waited for my ride with Love Star. Well, I should make it clear that there were only two of the three band members in the car: Adriana and Will.
The project that is Love Star formed last year when the band, formerly known as Mutual Cry, decided to make a happier, poppier sound come to life. Taking out some of their harder rock element, adding some synthesizers and mixing it together, they renamed their project Love Star.
Adriana Fernandez, lead vocalist, was set and ready for just about anything on the road. A fourth grade teacher by day and a glam-goddess by night, she says she loves the band and is extremely dedicated. "Everything has happened so fast," she said. Love Star's development has been a little more accelerated than Mutual Cry: they actually know what they're doing now. When it comes to marketing and choosing the right people to work with, the band has definitely made some wiser decisions.
Bassist Joe Torres, who, according to Fernandez, never sleeps due to his extreme love and dedication to music writing, is flying in around the same time we were expected to arrive in New York City. A permanent drummer hasn't been found yet, which I thought was quite funny. All bands have a bassist, guitarist and drummer. These guys rent theirs.
"We have yet to find someone who is dedicated like us," said Fernandez. When I asked why they just didn't find one good enough, guitarist Will Alves said, "We know a ton of great drummers. We just have to find one who wants to do the whole band thing."
The trip to New York was meant as a follow-up on their efforts but due to time management and not being able to get days off from work, the money set aside for tickets to the actual conference went to a plane ticket for Torres. I took his spot in the white Toyota and kept the others company. The trip couldn't bring us more anxiety when all of a sudden we were stopped for an hour and a half due to a fatal collision between a car and a semi. "This is everything we expected and more," said Alves, sarcastically. But we eventually got to New York. After the speeding tickets, accidents and sights that included nothing fun for miles, Alves said, "The only thing I'll remember about Pennsylvania are all the trees. They look like broccoli."
