I have my doubts

Does it go against the grain to want equals rights for women, but want the privileges of being one, too? Is that hypocritical?

I've always tried to be good about splitting the tab and being completely equal, but am I being a fool?

I don't think you should feel guilty about being treated to a night out the town once in a while. But, I'm not sure if that's just my own rationalization because I shamelessly want to be treated out.

Is it about finding a balance? Treating oneRead More...

Looking for a "Singles" event

I'm spending my Saturday night researching which bar and/or event hosts a good "singles night." Yep, I'm that cool.

In an effort to encourage some of my single friends to date, I've been looking into singles events around town as well as looking at where our Windy City stands compared to other places.

In my search I came across an interesting 2008 singles map from The Boston Globe. If I'm reading it correctly, at first glance it seems single men outnumber single women in thRead More...

What is taking the high road?

Everyone always talks about taking the high road, but I'm starting to think that saying has been misinterpreted over the years. Especially when it comes to relationships.

There's a situation in my life right now that I can't seem to move on from. Someone recently let me down and I'm not sure if it's worth talking to them about it. I don't know whether to just tell them my honest opinion of them or let our relationship status change into "weirdsies" and avoid them.

If I tell Read More...

Sex and lies

There's a cold war going on between the liars and the non-liars. It's too early to tell who's winning.

I'd like to say I'm on the non-liar team mostly because it's hard for me to lie. There's too much work involved and it's always better, I feel, to just be honest and upfront with people. Why draw things out with lies?

For these reasons, I always wonder how people can cheat. I'm not about to go all holier than thou on anyone, but I don't understand how people can keep up suchRead More...

My NYC trip

I took a break from relationships (or the lack there of) and spent the last couple of days in New York City. We were almost mugged 15 minutes after we landed in the city and spent our nights in a hotel most likely run by Norman Bates. Sigh. So many memories.

<img title="Statue of Liberty taken by Cyndi Loza" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4037/4397318986_2ec950ef58.jpg" alt="The Statute of Liberty taken during my trip to New York City last weekendRead More...

Sex Talk

Maybe it's because I grew up in a very Catholic, Mexican family but there is something about being able to talk about sex freely and candidly with other women that to me is very exciting.

That said, I was thrilled when my gym, Flirty Girl Fitness, held a discussion with sex educator and therapist Dr. Laura Berman on Sunday. The New York Times Best Selling author and Oprah Show regular led a fun, frank lecture and answered questions about intimacy and sexual wellbeing.

Among Read More...

I'm the Latina Matthew McConaughey

I'm the Latina Matthew McConaughey. I'm trying to figure out how to deal with this realization.

A coworker brought up McConaughey's "Failure to Launch" when the subject of living with ones parents was discussed at work. In the movie, McConaughey plays 35 year-old Tripp who's relationship troubles seem to begin and end with the fact that he lives with his parents. His parents are convinced that the only way to get their son to leave the nest is by helping him find the right Read More...

Is honesty so 2009?

I'm starting to doubt if being honest and forthcoming is always the ideal route to take.

I always thought it was best to be honest. Sure, it might be hard or awkward to tell the truth sometimes, but at least you know you're honest with people and yourself. I think I got this mentality growing up with my Mexican family. They were never shy to tell me when I would gain weight or had something in my teeth. God bless them.

Honest might not be the best way to be with peopRead More...

Online dating: If my brother can do it, anyone can

Since I've been single, it seems everyone around me is finding love. (As a side note, my shuffle just tried to maliciously mock me by just now choosing to play "Real Love" by The Beatles.)

I don't mean to write that to sound bitter either. I'm very happy for all my friends and family who are now dating -- some for the first time ever. It's just something I've been noticing more now that I'm not in a relationship.

I think my sudden observation stems from my interest in how Read More...

"I've fallen in like with you"

I was reminded of one of my favorite episodes of Home Movies today. If you haven't watched the show I recommend you do. It's a great animated series about an eight year-old, Brendon Small, who makes films (usually hilarious remakes) with his friends Melissa Robbins and Jason Penopolis.

In the episode "Yoko (aka We’ll Always Have Tuesday)," sparks fly between Brendon and classmate Loni during a camping trip. Loni ends up breaking up with Brendon for her old boyfriend, MitchRead More...

Friends with benefits: Avoid it or let chanclas fly?

I don't think I can ever be in a "friends with benefits" relationship. I'm just not that good a friend.

Lately, I've been considering the advantages and disadvantages of being friends with benefits (FWB). It may be appealing to be sexually intimate with your friend but I'd be too concerned of how the politics of the friendship would change. Even if they're not that good a friend, I've seen too many people (of both sexes) involved in a FWB relationship become attached at somRead More...

Music, love and beyond

"What came first, the music or the misery? People worry about kids playing with guns, or watching violent videos ... Nobody worries about kids listening to thousands, literally thousands of songs about heartbreak, rejection, pain, misery and loss. Did I listen to pop music because I was miserable? Or was I miserable because I listened to pop music?" -- Rob Gordon in High Fidelity, played by actor John Cusack, had it so right.
I think I was 18 years-old when I realized Harry Nilsson's "ORead More...
